This week: Where can a girl in NYC get a tan this time of year?

Otranto, Puglia

Who loves the sun? ME!

“I am so starved of Vitamin D that last night I was looking up flights to Seville (where it's sunny every day), and they’re just €33,” Dublin-based editor Sasha Brady just told me, and the emotional blender I’m in immediately shot into liquify mode. Oh, to live in a place where flights are that short and cheap!

Along with every other New Yorker, I am once again a victim of the winter blues, when leaving your apartment requires all the strength you can muster (southern hemisphere peeps are presently free of this burden). I’ve been telling anyone who will (and will not) listen since New Year’s that I need to go somewhere where the locals have never heard the words “frost advisory.”

As I crank my space heater to the highest setting, I’m reminiscing on childhood trips to Florida’s Gulf Coast and dreaming about sunning myself on a paradisiacal plage in Bora Bora. If far-off places aren’t in your winter playbook, maybe it’s a spa day or seeing a fabulous show that will satisfy you until your next vacation.

By the time this email finds you: Sasha, I really hope you went to Seville, and everyone else that is feeling the cold, I’m manifesting a liberal dose of winter sunshine in your future.

Spring is stirring in the northern hemisphere by the time March rolls around, but it’s also the best time for a shoulder season trip, aka far fewer crowds. Log your PTO now and decide your destination later.

Gelato in Italy. Need I say more?

Gelato

Italy

“No country does gelato quite like Italy, whose gelato rivals Renaissance masters in dedication to their craft,” says contributor Anna Staropoli, who’s spent years living in and exploring Italy, tracking down the best gelato shops in the country to prove it.

Mexico is also calling our name this year. Maybe a romantic weekend in Mexico City, losing entire afternoons to art galleries and nights to jazz clubs? Yes! Or enjoying the "forget about everything and chill" vibe of its beautiful beaches? Also, yes!

Reader question: I have always wanted to go on safari in Africa, but I’m not even sure how to even start planning that kind of trip. Help!

LP recommendation: East Africa is the true spiritual home of the safari. It’s also perhaps the best place to watch wildlife on the planet. Here’s how to plan an unforgettable trip.
